Tied at the top: PHS girls share first spot in Lovell

A school record shattered by two distance runners and multiple event winners were not enough to separate the Powell and Worland girls’ track and field teams, as two of the top schools in the state tied at 188 points on a warm Saturday in Lovell.

The record breaking performance once again came from Kinley Cooley, who was joined by junior teammate Kenna Jacobsen who also broke the school’s 3200 record in Lovell.

Cooley finished second in the event but broke the record she set last year of 12:04.12 by a considerable amount with a new time of 11:43.75.

Jacobsen also broke the record after racing under 12 minutes, finishing in 11:51.19 to take home third.

“Extremely impressive performances by both girls to obliterate the old record. It also puts them in a good position to qualify for the track classic this week,” coach Scott Smith said.

Cooley had already qualified for the state meet in the event, while Jacobsen added that mark alongside Karee Cooley who finished fourth in 12:20.89.

Powell had a pair of double event winners on Saturday, with Waycee Harvey winning the long jump at 17 feet even and the triple jump with a 35-5 1/2, and Katie O’Brien winning the shot put at 36-11 and qualifying in the discus with a 120-11.

“It was great to see our kids get out and win events with this field of teams,” Smith said.

Harvey also added the 400 meters and 100 meters to her qualifying standards, finishing third in the 100 (13.17) and second in the 400 meters (59.85).

Other event winners included Lauryn Bennett in the pole vault (9-0) and Jacobsen in the 800 with a qualifying time of 2:24.81.

Powell added a third out of four potential relay qualifiers to the state meet, placing second in the 1600 sprint medley relay in 4:37.26 via the team of Ashlee Jacobsen, Naomi Whipple, Audrey Johnson and Myah Rakness.

“It is always nice to get another relay qualified for state,” Smith said. “To have that insurance policy going into regionals sometimes plays out to have a huge effect on state results.”

Powell and Worland finished well ahead of third place Lovell which had 54 points.

The top two teams from last year’s state meet continue to battle it out, as Smith expects the battle to continue down the stretch the rest of the regular season and into the postseason.

“The Worland girls and our girls are really closely matched as teams but our strongest areas of depth are different,” Smith said. “Both teams had great performances in Lovell and every meet matches up differently with different teams. We will see them at every meet after our dual, so we will have a lot of fun competing with them down the stretch.”

The next opportunity for the Panthers to get on the track will be a quick turnaround, hosting a meet on Tuesday (today), which is expected to be a dual against Park County rival Cody.

That meet is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start at Powell High School, before the Panthers head back on the road the remainder of the season.
