Eighth graders break own record

The Powell Middle School Cub boys’ track and field teams claimed resounding victories in their lone home meet, defeating Cody and Thermopolis at the Powell Athletic Roundtable Middle School Invitational on Saturday at Powell High School.

The eighth grade Cubs were dominant once again, winning the meet by 70 points over second place Cody.

The 4x100 team of Keaton Bennett, Karcher Foley, Braxton Nelson and Cobey Khan broke the school record set earlier in the season, this time breaking into the 47s with a 47.97.

“All of the relays have been working diligently on handoffs and starts these past few weeks,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “We have also mixed up the order of the legs. All these little changes are really paying off.”

Three out of those four competitors went on to be double individual event winners, with Khan winning the 100 meters in 12.47 and the 400 meters in 57.87. Bennett won the 100 meter hurdles in 15.91 and the 200 meter hurdles in 28.82. Foley swept the distance jumps, winning the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 5 inches, and the triple jump with a distance of 36-3.

Levi Cox won the shot put with a throw of 34-0.

The 800 sprint medley team of Brayden Benander, Santiago Gutierrez, Cash Peterson and Noah Young won with a time of 1:57.66.

Bennett also cleared 11 feet in the pole vault, which was performed Monday due to safety concerns, and Nelson cleared 5-4 in the high jump in the same setting. Cox was the top thrower in discus for the Cubs with a throw of 105-8.

The lone new Best of the Best qualifying mark came from Foley in the 200 meters (25.46).

The eighth graders finished with 109 points, Cody had 39 and Thermopolis had 38.

The seventh grade boys also had a strong performance at home, doubling up their nearest opponent in Thermopolis.

Powell had several individual winners on Saturday, with Isaiah Torres winning the 1600 meters (5:38.32), Karzten Carter the 200 meter hurdles (33.74), Blake Wood the triple jump (32-3) and Morgan Rodriguez the shot put (32-0).

Rodriguez also topped the discus among Cub throwers on Monday with a 78-8, Carter cleared 4-6 in high jump and Mason Cheatham and Russell Goolsbey both cleared 7-0 in pole vault.

Cheatham and Goolsbey both qualified for the Best of the Best in the pole vault, Rodriguez qualified in the shot put, Goolsbey also qualified in the 800 meters (2:30.2) and triple jump (31-5 1/2), while Torres qualified in the 1600 and 400 meters (1:05.95).

The seventh graders finished with 104 points for the meet, doubling up Thermopolis which finished with 52 while Cody finished with 25.

“The athletes were ready to compete,” Haney said. “For some of these athletes it was only their second meet of the season. For others, it was their third meet, but having last weekend off really made everyone eager to get out and perform.”

The Cubs will head out of town for their final two meets of the year this week.

Powell heads to Thermopolis to take part in the conference meet on Saturday, before athletes who are qualified for the Best of the Best will head to Lander on Tuesday to cap off the season.
