The Powell High School girls tennis team trumped Cody again on Tuesday, while Cody got a bit of revenge on the Powell boys.
Playing in Cody, the Lady Panthers won four of five matches — as they did on Sept. 4 — while the Panther boys went 2-3; the boys had beaten Cody 3-2 earlier in the year.
“I still feel like we’re improving,” said PHS head coach Ray Bieber, adding that, “We’ve just got to stay focused.”
Boys No. 1 singles player Cody Akin advanced his record to a perfect 8-0 on the year, as did girls No. 3 doubles players Hattie Pimentel and Madi Morrow.
Girls No. 1 singles player Cydney Barrus lost 6-0, 6-3 to Cody’s Meg Dickerson, but played really well and rallied from being down 5-0 in the second set, Bieber said.
“Many of her games went to deuce,” he said. “She’s starting to come around.”
At No. 2 singles, Laura Bright earned a victory over Elisha Smith, who had to retire with an injury when the first set was tied 5-5. Bright had been down 5-1 before rallying.
Josie Brinkerhoff and Rachel Anderson beat Emma Berry and Shaylee Schutzman 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Aimee Kawano and Kelsi Barrus trumped Jessica Morales and Sarina Poto, 6-0, 6-3.
Bieber said both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams played well.
Morrow and Pimentel, meanwhile, kept up their undefeated season by defeating Lucille Sax and Dorothy Shippin 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
At the top of the Powell boys lineup, Akin beat Cody’s Zach Ross 6-2, 6-2 in what Bieber called “one of his best matches of the year.”
No. 2 singles player Sterling Cozzens lost 6-1, 6-4 to Angelo Prosceno, but “battled really well,” the coach said.
At No. 1 doubles, Matt Brown and Jeffrey Pool beat Daniel Woods and Tyler Vaughn 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Bieber said the duo had a lapse in the second set, but really well in the first and third sets.
No. 2 doubles players Kristian Stenlund and Blaze Flores lost 6-4, 6-3 to Brad Sankey and Cooper Thompson while Dallin North and Miles Rumbolz lost 6-1, 6-0 to Bailey Lasko and Evan Wambeke in the No. 3 doubles slot.
The Panthers will host Sheridan at 2 p.m. Friday and Gillette at 9 a.m. Saturday.
“It’s always tough to play the two biggest schools right before regionals,” Bieber said.
