Harvey ties 400 school record

Posted

A host of Powell Panther girls’ track and field athletes excelled at the Wyoming Track and Field Classic in Casper on Friday, where Waycee Harvey tied a 24-year-old record in the 400 meters, before the Panthers won the Rocky Mountain Invite on Saturday in Cowley.

WYOMING TRACK CLASSIC

A crowded, competitive field at the Wyoming Track and Field Classic saw several Panther girls place strong, with Harvey tying the school record in the 400 with a time of 58.57 to finish fifth.

That tied the record set by Megan Liner in 2000, as Harvey cut several seconds off her time from her previous season best.

“It was a real highlight to see Waycee tie a 24-year-old record at the classic,” coach Scott Smith said. “It shows how strong of a competitor Waycee is to drop that much time in her 400 in just one week from her previous season best.”

Katie O’Brien ended up being the highest placing Panther, finishing fourth in the shot put throwing 38 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

She also placed eighth in the discus with a toss of 110-11.

Lauryn Bennett finished in sixth in the pole vault (9-6); Harvey placed seventh in the triple jump (34-4 3/4); Kenna Jacobsen placed seventh in the 800 meters (2:27.9); Addy Thorington tied for eighth in the high jump (4-9); Kinley Cooley placed seventh in the 3200 meters (12:21.11) and ninth in the 1600 meters (5:45.45); Karee Cooley placed ninth in the 3200 meters (12:27.44); Shelby Zickefoose placed 10th in the 3200 meters (12:27.75); Myah Rakness placed 11th in the 1600 meters (5:48.66) and Brynn Hillman placed 12th in the 3200 meters (13:03.66).

ROCKY MOUNTAIN INVITE

Heading over to Cowley on Saturday the Panthers ran away with the team competition, finishing 135 points ahead of second place Lovell.

Powell earned a couple of new qualifiers, as Nalani Jordan won the discus with a state qualifying throw of 114-0, and Hali Hancock cleared 4-11 to qualify for the high jump.

Harvey was a double event winner, taking the top spot in the 100 meters (12.58) and the triple jump (34-0 1/2).

Kinley Cooley won the 1600 meters (5:43.32); Jacobsen won the 3200 meters (12:03.91); Thorington tied to win the high jump (5-3); Bennett won the pole vault (9-6); Paige Sanders won the long jump (15-6) and O’Brien won the shot put (39-11).

“I really liked the way our kids competed at Rocky,” Smith said.

Powell finished with 234 points, well ahead of Lovell with 99 in the six team meet.

FINAL REGULAR SEASON MEETS

Powell will now have a busy weekend once again with two meets, starting with the Cody Trackstravaganza on Thursday which is scheduled for a noon start.

The Panthers then head to Thermopolis on Friday for a 1 p.m. start.

Those will be the final regular season meets for the Panthers, before heading to the 3A West Regional meet in Mountain View next Friday and Saturday on May 10-11.
