Six qualify in opening weekend

Diving back in the deep end the Powell High School boys’ swimming team experienced mixed early season results — winning a quad in Powell on Friday before placing fourth in the Cody Pentathlon on Saturday.

Starting out the season at home the Panthers welcomed Cody, Worland and Newcastle to town and finished with a 10-point victory over second-place Cody.

“It was closer than we anticipated,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “We were down some swimmers due to sickness and not enough practices, but overall we did really well.”

The Panthers had three individual winners on the day with all three athletes earning state qualifying marks: Jon Hawley in diving (186), Gabe Rose in the 100 fly (1:03.74) and Rui Parker in the 100 free (53.35).

Just behind Hawley in the diving by less than a point was Taggart Shumway (185.90) who also qualified for the state meet.

The final two qualifying times came from freshman Will Fuller, who earned a spot in the 50 free (25.54), and Kobus Diver, who qualified in the 200 free (2:08.23) and the 500 free (5:37.64).

“Will has been swimming in middle school and USA. We have been watching him for the last few years and we know he has a lot of potential,” Warren said. “We expected him to qualify this year, in the 50 right at the beginning is great for him. It was kind of a surprise for everyone but it was awesome.”

The Panthers had a lot of swimmers showing improvement despite the early season meet and neared qualifying marks throughout the weekend, despite some time standards becoming tougher to reach than last season.

CODY PENTATHLON

Heading into Saturday the Panthers knew they would be coming up against tough competition in Cody, squaring off with last year’s state runner-up Buffalo and Riverton being added to the same teams from Friday.

The modified pentathlon included a junior varsity session that had athletes competing in shorter races, and a varsity session that had all athletes competing in one 100-yard race for each stroke in addition to the 50 free to score.

Scoring the highest for the Panthers was Rose, who had a total time of 4:55.70 over the five events to take 13th overall on the day.

Buffalo placed half of the top 10 finishers, and ran away with the team competition.

“(Buffalo) brought back all of their scorers from state,” Warren said. “They have a lot of potential and strength behind them this year. It will be great for us to see them as often as possible and I think we will be swimming against them frequently which will be good.”

Hawley and Shumway again performed strongly in the diving, with Shumway placing second (176.90) and Hawley third (174.95).

RIVERTON INVITE

After staying close to home the first weekend, the Panthers head on the road to Riverton on Saturday to take part in an early season invitational.

Warren does not know exactly which teams will be competing in the invitational, but is hoping for good competition as the Panthers continue to get into shape early in the season.

“It should be another good weekend of competition,” Warren said. “Another week of training underneath us with two-a-days will help them as they are still getting into shape. A full week of practice with no Friday meet will help us as well.”
