Avenging a loss to Burlington from earlier this season, the Powell High School girls basketball team took down the Huskies Tuesday night with a 35-24 win.

The Powell girls have battled the turnover bug most of the season, however the young squad caused more mayhem than they suffered at Burlington. Time after time, the Panthers wrestled the ball away from the Huskies and came charging up the floor to their own end in transition.

“I’m proud of the girls for getting another ‘W’ in the win column,” said PHS head coach Chelsea Buher. “Tuesday night is a tough night to play a varsity game, especially when we played our varsity game first. We are used to playing on Fridays and Saturdays following our JV.”

Buher’s Panthers were perched on a 10-2 lead until a Husky 3-pointer at the buzzer went in to make it a 10-5 game after one.

Burlington started the second period with a quick three from Kelsi Nicholson and went on to get within a bucket at halftime, with Powell leading 17-15.

The dam began to crack in quarter number three when the Panthers scored 10 while holding Burlington to four. That made it 27-19 after three.

As the clock wound down on the game, Powell’s Hailee Hyde netted one last bunny to account for the final score.

Coach Buher said her squad “came out and while we didn’t shoot our best game, were able to win anyway.” Part of the effort involved cutting down on turnovers, dropping the total to 15.

Junior Paije Johnson had a game-high 12 points.

“She’s been playing well for us, more aggressive and physical,” the coach said of Johnson. “It’s been nice to see because it’s something we have been working on quite a bit with her.”

And what about the stronger second half for the Panthers?

“[Rose] Graft and [Sabrina] Shoopman did a great job on Nicholson of Burlington,” Buher said of her change in defensive tactics. “We ended up placing a chaser on her, where Graft and Shoopman took turns guarding her. She [Nicholson] went from having 11 of the team’s 15 points in the first half to only scoring one point for the rest of the game. Nicholson is a nice player and will have a successful career for Burlington.”

On Friday, the Panthers entertain Thermopolis in the Panther Gym at 5:30 p.m.
