Survive late Lovell scare

Posted

The Powell Pioneers completed a doubleheader sweep of Lovell on Monday in Powell — defeating the Mustangs 10-0 before surviving a late scare and winning 7-3 to to continue their hot streak despite the wind, rain and cool conditions.

POWELL 10, LOVELL 0

For the second time in four days the teams matched up for a doubleheader, this time playing the reverse fixture in Powell (29-13, 8-0 ‘A’ Northwest) after Powell swept the doubleheader on the road against Lovell (16-18, 4-6 ‘A’ Northwest) last Friday.

Rainy weather broke up just before the game started, but overcast skies persisted throughout the contest and neither team found momentum early.

Powell got on the board first in the bottom of the third, when Ethan Welch walked to lead off alongside Brock Johnson who also walked to give Powell two on with no outs.

Jhett Schwahn singled to bring in Welch, before Cade Queen hit a three run home run to give Powell a 4-0 lead.

Despite having no outs on the board Powell was unable to do any more damage in the inning.

After Trey Stenerson continued his strong performance on the mound, the Pioneers extended the lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning after Aiden Greenwald led off with a single.

“He (Stenerson) is starting to have more velocity on his fast ball,” manager Jason Borders said. “He could be a difference maker down the road for us. He has that arm that can beat a lot of people.”

Welch followed with a triple to bring Greenwald around, and get into scoring position himself with no outs. Johnson singled to bring Welch in and extend the lead to 6-0.

Again, despite no outs Powell was unable to push the lead out further and it remained 6-0.

In the fifth inning the Pioneers loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to bring in any runs.

Powell finally got to the finish line in the sixth, starting with a single by Schwahn and a walk to Queen to put two on.

Schwahn advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a steal during Queen’s at bat, and a Stenerson single brought in both and made it 8-0.

Stenerson stole second and third during Ryan Cordes’ at bat, while Cordes walked to put runners on the corners.

Cordes stole second during Aidan Wantulok’s at bat, which ended in a sac fly to bring in Stenerson and advance Cordes to third.

Dalton Worstell was hit by a pitch and Greenwald was walked to load the bases with one out and Welch was walked to finish the game via mercy rule 10-0 in the sixth.

Stenerson finished by giving up two hits against six strikeouts and only one walk on the mound.

Queen led the team with three RBIs, followed by Stenerson and Welch with two apiece while Johnson, Schwahn and Wantulok each had one.

POWELL 7, LOVELL 3

The break between games allowed for the sun to peak out from behind the clouds early in the second contest, with Powell basking in the sunlight early.

Johnson led off with a single, but was out on a fielder’s choice on Schwahn’s hit.

Schwahn stole second and third, before a fielder’s choice saw the Mustangs throw home trying to get Schwahn out.

He snuck in under the tag and Queen was safe at first to give Powell the early 1-0 lead.

Stenerson was hit by a pitch and Cordes walked to load the bases, but a fielder’s choice thrown home on the force out beat Queen, putting two outs on the board for Powell.

A bad pitch allowed Stenerson to score, but a fly out by Cole Fauskee ended the inning with Powell up 2-0.

In the second Powell extended the lead, as Johnson got a double with two outs and was driven in by a Schwahn double.

Queen and Stenerson walked — loading the bases once again for Powell with two outs.

Cordes hit a single up the middle and scored one, but Queen was thrown out on a play at the plate to save a run for Lovell and keep it 4-0 heading into the third.

Lovell loaded the bases to start the third with no outs.

A fielder’s choice got the force out at home, giving Powell hope to get out without any damage.

A sac fly allowed a run to score, and on a relay throw to third Johnson tagged the runner to get the third out with Powell leading 4-1.

Lovell threatened again in the top of the fifth, loading up the bases against Worstell with two outs.

A deep low driven ball went right to Cordes, who made the catch and allowed Powell to maintain the 4-1 lead.

Powell was unable to find a groove at the plate to put the game away, before Lovell cut further into the lead in the sixth.

A walk and an error on miscommunication at second gave Lovell two on with one out.

Greenwald struck out one before a walk loaded the bases.

A deep double brought in a pair, cutting the lead to 4-3. Greenwald struck out the final batter and Powell held onto the lead.

Needing offense in the bottom half to put the game away, Powell turned to an ultra aggressive base running strategy.

“Our thing is always to keep putting pressure on teams,” Borders said.

Johnson got on with a walk, stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch to give Powell the 5-3 lead.

Queen walked and followed suit, stealing second and third before scoring on a dropped third strike to Stenerson.

Stenerson then stole all the way to third and scored on a wild pitch, which gave Powell breathing room with a 7-3 lead.

“It was frustrating to try and coach that game with how it was going,” Borders said. “The higher the intensity and the higher level we face, the better we play. These boys don’t panic.”

Greenwald finished the game on the mound with three straight outs and the Pioneers earned their 12th victory in a row.

Schwahn, Queen and Cordes all finished with RBIs for Powell.

GREEN RIVER TOURNEY

Powell now heads on the road for a three-day weekend at a wood bat tournament in Green River, kicking off Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Pocatello.

“Wood bats will let you know if you are putting the barrel to the ball,” Borders said. “It’s harder to hit with a wood bat than a metal bat.”

Powell defeated Pocatello 11-1 earlier in June at the BWW tournament in Billings.

On Saturday, Powell will get a second look at 8 a.m. against a ‘A’ Southwest opponent in the Evanston Outlaws (14-15 overall, 2-0 ‘A’ Southwest).

At 1 p.m. Saturday the Pioneers will get their first look at the current top ‘A’ East opponent Douglas (25-8 overall, 9-1 ‘A’ East).

“I want them (Douglas) to know what they are getting,” Borders said. “I want to start letting people know what to expect at the state tournament.”

Bright and early again on Sunday the Pioneers play at 8 a.m. against another ‘A’ East opponent in Torrington (18-7 overall, 4-3 ‘A’ East).
