Powell High School’s boys’ soccer team was one of the best in Wyoming in 2021, and the end-of-season lists prove that.
Six Panthers — Sam Bauer, Hawkin Sweeney, Garrett Morris, Reece Bauer, Landon Sessions and Ashton Brewer — were selected to the 3A All-State team. Along with those six who made All-State, freshman midfielder Chance Franks made the 3A West All-Conference team.
At forward, Sweeney was 3A’s leader in goals, scoring 22 times this season. Sam Bauer finished second in assists with 10, while also netting five goals.
In the midfield, Morris, a junior, played a key role for the Panthers, notching four goals and four assists. Franks tallied three goals and four assists in his first year of high-school soccer.
Reece Bauer and Sessions were among the state’s stingiest defensive players. They also contributed to the team’s offense, as Bauer assisted three of the Panthers’ goals, while Sessions scored twice.
In goal, Ashton Brewer consistently held opposing strikers in check. The senior made a handful of flashy saves throughout the season, recording a total of 11 saves on the season.
Powell finished second in the state tournament and ended with a 14-3 overall record, outscoring opponents 86-13.
Sweeney, Morris, Reece Bauer and Franks will all return next season, along with a handful of other key players from the 2021 varsity squad.
