Panthers wrap up regular season

Head to state Friday and Saturday

Finishing off the regular season, the Powell High School indoor track teams went to Gillette once again to take part in the Sheridan Invite on Friday.

“I was really happy with our kids the way they were able to perform,” coach Scott Smith said. “I think that they have shown steady improvement and been able to work through the early morning departures.”

The boys finished sixth overall as a team, and second among 3A teams in the 10 team meet.

Cody Seifert led the way for Powell, tying for second in the 55 meter dash (6.82) and placing second outright in the triple jump (41-1 1/2) — reaching the state qualifying standard in the triple jump.

“Cody was a nice pick up after recovering from two different surgeries,” Smith said. “He has developed into one of the top sprinters and triple jumpers in all classes.”

Daniel Merritt placed top five in two events, finishing fourth in the 800 (2:06.17) and fifth in the 1600 (4:57.11).

Colin Walker finished fourth in the 3200 (13:31.64), while the Panthers were strong in the 55 hurdles with Simon Shoopman tied for fourth (8.35) and Stuart Shoopman finished seventh (8.56).

For the girls, Brynn Hillman had the highest placement for the Panthers — taking third in the 3200 (13:17.49) while adding an eighth place finish in the 1600 (6:13.58).

PHS continued to be strong in the distance events as Kenna Jacobsen finished fourth in the 1600 (5:56.76) and eighth in the 800 (2:32.31).

“Our distance kids have done a nice job of working hard, they have kept running after cross country and it is showing in their performances,” Smith said. “Anna [Bartholomew] and Sydney [Spomer] have come in from volleyball and progressed well with a large part of that being from their experience in their previous outdoor seasons.”

Other placers for the girls included Spomer taking fifth in the triple jump (32-5 3/4) and Audrey Johnson taking sixth in the 400 (1:06.43).

Overall the girls placed seventh as a team and third among 3A competition.

Indoor track will come to a close this weekend, with the Panthers heading to Gillette for the fifth time this year for the state meet starting on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with field events and at 11 a.m. for running events.

The competition will continue on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with field events and at 9 a.m. with field events.

Powell will be taking 28 of the 39 athletes on the team to the meet, with a difficult competition expected in the first year of 3A indoor track.

Smith said it is difficult to predict where teams will land after competing throughout Wyoming, Utah and Idaho.

He believes Cody has enough depth at the 3A level for both boys and girls to take home the team title while the Panthers focus on taking home individual awards.

“We are looking at taking home a pile of individual and relay medals and let the team scores work themselves out,” Smith said. “There have been a lot of outstanding performances from Wyoming kids and this state meet is going to be a lot of fun to watch from a spectator standpoint.”
