Add two new state qualifiers over the weekend

After two weeks off for break the Powell Panther boys’ swim and dive team returned to the pool on Friday and Saturday — defeating Worland in a dual before edging out a win in the Gene Dozah Invitational.

POWELL 123, WORLAND 77

The weekend kicked off on Friday night, where the Panthers welcomed the Warriors to the pool in what was originally scheduled to be a quad.

Powell was powered by seven event wins, including victories in two of the three relays.

Individual victories came from Rui Parker who had victories in the 100 fly (58.24) and the 100 back (57.14); Gabe Rose in the 200 IM (2:19.97); Jon Hawley in diving (192.85) and Kobus Diver in the 500 free (5:26.87).

The 200 medley relay team of Parker, Diver, Rose and Will Fuller (1:51.77) claimed victory while the 200 free relay of Cole Fauskee, Aidan Cannizzaro, Tristin Dicks and Nathan Dupont (1:45.43) was the other relay team to win.

Powell added one qualifier on the night when Fauskee finished second in the 50 free and reached a qualifying standard of 24.63.

“It was good to see where Cole was at,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “We knew he was going to be one of our fastest swimmers.”

GENE DOZAH

Continuing the action at home on Saturday the Panthers welcomed in Cody, Riverton and Sublette County as well as Worland to Powell for the Gene Dozah Invitational.

Powell was hoping for the top two teams in 3A, Buffalo and Lander, to attend on Saturday, but the pair opted to attend a meet in Casper.

In the team scores Powell edged out Cody, led by a strong diving performance.

Hawley (197.35) again won the diving, beating out Cody’s Bryson Laing and Riverton’s Mason Lemley by just over a point.

“Jon is trying to break 200, so we are going to work on entries and things this week in hopes he can do that in Worland,” Warren said. “They are all pushing themselves with harder dives so they have time to learn them before we get to an 11-dive meet.”

Diving was the lone victory on the day, but the Panthers finished with 10 additional top five performances to help Powell finish with the team victory.

The Panthers added another qualifier in Cannizzaro, who earned a spot in the 100 back (1:05.49) to bring the total qualifiers for the state meet to 10.

Overall Powell added nine new qualifying times as a team for the state meet in their first two meets back after the Christmas break.

WORLAND INVITE

Powell now gets a full week of practice before its next meet, an invitational, at Worland at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Warren said the picture is starting to become clearer for the team and what events are best for athletes, as significant time cuts are starting to show for younger swimmers that are new to the team this year.

“It’s nice to have a full week of training without having to break it up with a meet,” Warren said.
