Panther tennis kicked off its competitions this past week, playing four matches over three days — seeing the girls walking away with a 3-1 record and the boys with a 2-2 record.

THUNDER BASIN

Powell kicked off its season at home on Thursday, sweeping Thunder Basin on both the boys and girls side in their first matchups of the season.

At the No. 1 singles the Panthers took control early and often in both matches, with senior Chase Anderson winning 6-3 and 6-2 in her matchup and junior Cade Queen winning 6-1 and 6-1 in his sweep.

No. 2 singles had junior Lachelle Lee winning her matchup 6-4 and 6-4, while freshman Nathan Preator won his match 6-1 and 6-3.

Moving on to No. 1 doubles the pairing of seniors Alli Harp and Sydney Hull won their matchup 6-2 and 6-4, while senior Kalin Hicswa and junior Keegan Hicswa won their matchup 6-1 and 6-0.

No. 2 doubles had junior Seegar Wormald and freshman Ryan Barrus winning on the boys’ side 6-3 and 7-6, while seniors Alexis Terry and Hannah Hincks won the No. 2 matchup 6-3 and 6-1 for the girls.

No. 3 doubles had juniors Maya Landwehr and Lucy Whipple winning their matchup 6-2 and 6-1. There was no No. 3 doubles matchup for the boys.

CAMPBELL COUNTY

After sweeping Thunder Basin in the morning, the Panthers ran into a more difficult matchup in the afternoon against Campbell County.

In the No. 1 singles matchups, Anderson lost her matchup 6-2 and 6-4, but Queen won his matchup 6-0 and 6-1 for the boys.

For the No. 2 singles, Lee lost 6-2 and 6-1 in her matchup, while Preator won his matchup 7-5 and 6-0.

In No. 1 doubles Harp and Hull lost 7-6 and 6-3, while the Hiscwas lost 7-5 and 6-1.

Wormald and Barrus lost 6-0 and 6-0 in No. 2 doubles, while Terry and Hincks lost 6-2 and 6-1.

Freshman Taeson Schultz and sophomore Isaac Stensing lost a difficult three-set matchup 4-6, 7-6 and 4-6 at No. 3 doubles, while Landwehr and Whipple picked up the girls lone victory in No. 3 doubles after a 6-2, 6-2 win.

“Freshmen Nathan [Preator], Ryan [Barrus], Taeson [Schultz] and sophomore Isaac [Stensing] have stepped up to play some great varsity tennis for the first time,” Panthers tennis coach Joe Asay said. “I also had some junior boys and girls step up and play some great varsity tennis for the first time in Seegar [Wormald], Maya [Landwehr] and Lucy [Whipple].”

GREEN RIVER

After two home conference matchups to start the season, the Panthers went on the road Friday, matching up against Green River, with the girls winning 4-1 and the boys being swept 5-0.

At No. 1 singles, Anderson lost a difficult three-set match 2-6, 6-3 and 2-6, while Queen lost his matchup 6-1 and 7-6 while losing the tiebreaker in the second set 7-3.

Lee won her matchup in No. 2 singles by a score of 6-3 and 6-1, while Preator lost his matchup 4-6, 6-4 and 1-6.

Harp and Hull won their matchup at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-3 and 7-5, while the Hicswa brothers lost their matchup 6-1 and 6-1.

In No. 2 doubles, Hincks and Terry recovered from an opening set loss 6-4, to win 6-2 and 6-2 in the second and third set to win for the girls. Wormald and Stensing lost their matchup 6-0 and 6-1 for the boys.

Landwehr and Whipple won their matchup for No. 3 girls’ doubles 6-1 and 6-1 while Barrus and Schultz lost 6-2 and 6-0.

ROCK SPRINGS

The weekend was not over for the Panthers, continuing the southwest road trip to Rock Springs on Saturday, resulting in Powell sweeping both teams.

Anderson won her No. 1 singles matchup 6-2 and 6-1, while Queen finished his with a 6-0 and 7-5 victory.

“The singles players have a tough challenge finding their way through tough matches,” Asay said. “Unlike the doubles who have a partner to work with, it is very positive for the entire team when the singles players play strong.”

Lee won a tight two-set matchup, winning 6-4 and 6-4, while Preator won 6-4 and 6-0 in their No. 2 singles matchups.

Harp and Hull won their matchup 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while the Hicswa brothers won 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3 in a close match.

Hincks and Terry recovered from another opening set loss of 7-5, to win 6-0 and 6-3 in sets two and three for the victory, while Wormald and Stensing won their first set 6-3, lost set two 7-5 but recovered and dominated set three 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.

Landwehr and Whipple had a difficult match in No. 3 doubles, losing the first set 7-6 after losing the tiebreaker 7-1, but won both sets two and three 6-4 to claim a 2-1 set victory. Barrus and Schultz won their matchup 6-3 and 7-6 while winning the tiebreaker 7-3.

“The boys and girls played great through the first two conference matches and non-conference matches, even recognizing where they can improve with the losses,” Asay said.
