Panther girls qualify three individuals, three relays at Worland Invitational

Posted

Wyoming weather finally held off long enough for the Powell Panther girls’ track and field team to get into action — qualifying three individuals and three of the four relays for state at the D&D Invitational in Worland on Thursday.

Leading the way for Powell with two individual qualifications was Waycee Harvey, who earned qualifying marks by placing fourth in the 100 meters (13.26) and third in the 400 meters (1:01.12). Harvey also placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 3 inches.

Tough competition made for an increased quality of competition for the Panthers, something coach Scott Smith felt helped challenge the team in the first meet.

“It was a great start to the season against very high quality teams,” Smith said. “Sheridan just won the girls 4A indoor and Cody won the 3A indoor and our girls had a great start.”

The other two qualifiers for the Panthers were Kinley Cooley who took second place in the 3200 (12:19) and Anna Bartholomew who placed fourth in the 400 (1:02.01).

“Kinley was just a few seconds off our school record which is unbelievable for the first meet,” Smith said.

Powell also qualified three of the four relays for the state meet, winning two of the relays in the process.

The team of Kenna Jacobsen, Megan Jacobsen, Bartholomew and Harvey won the 4x400 with a time of 4:16.87, while the team of Cooley, the Jacobsen sisters and Bartholomew won the 4x800 with a time of 10:13.16.

Despite placing fourth, the team of Averie Warner, Ine Kollstad, Kami Jensen and Sydney Spomer earned a qualifying time for the state meet in the 4x100 relay with a 53.59.

Other top placers for Powell included Addy Thorington tying for second in high jump (4-9), Lauryn Bennett placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.88) and Catelynn Floy placed fourth in the triple jump (32-7).

Team results from the Worland meet were not available as of press time.

Powell took part in the Meetster Bunny Invitational in Cody on Monday, and is set to host the LA Kohnke Invitational on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Results from the Meetster Bunny Invitational will be in the April 13 edition of the Powell Tribune alongside a preview for the LA Kohnke.
