Panther football game vs. Douglas canceled

Friday night’s game between Douglas and Powell has been canceled after “multiple” Douglas football players tested positive for COVID-19, Powell High School Activities Director Scott McKenzie announced Wednesday afternoon.

McKenzie said additional Douglas players had been placed in quarantine, with others still in a testing process.

“Due to the timeline needed by the Converse County Health Department to complete their screening process with every player, it is not safe nor in the best interest of either team to play each other at this time,” McKenzie said Wednesday.

Two students at Douglas High School had tested positive on Monday and Tuesday, according to Converse County health officials, along with two staffers and a student at the Douglas middle school.

The news of the game’s cancellation came on the same day Powell earned the No. 1 spot in the latest WyoPreps.com Media and Coaches Football Poll. The Panthers, 3-0, earned 12 of 21 first-place votes following their 31-0 defeat of Lander Valley 31-0.

Powell had been set for a ranked matchup with the Bearcats, who cracked the top five for the first time of the 2020 season on Wednesday, coming in at No. 5 with a 2-0 record.

Last weekend, the Panther volleyball team’s scheduled games at Kemmerer and Pinedale were canceled in connection with a positive COVID-19 test in Powell, but following contact tracing, the team was ultimately cleared to return to action this week.
