Panther boys face difficult slate of games

An unexpected week off last week due to inclement weather left the No. 2 ranked Powell Panther boys’ soccer team idle, allowing the Panthers a week to focus on finishing before a difficult stretch of three games in four days.

“We worked a lot on finishing as I felt that was the area where we needed the most attention after the Mountain View and Lyman games,” coach David Gilliatt said. “I thought possession and buildup were good so we had several sessions focused on shots and shot creation.”

The difficult slate begins Wednesday on the road in Cody at 4 p.m., where an early battle for control of the 3A West will take place against the No. 3-ranked Broncs (3-1 overall, 3-0 3A West).

“I want them to realize their potential and play our game even if things don’t go our way initially,” Gilliatt said. “I expect Cody to be a tough opponent with some really good players. I think this game will be a good test of our progress so far this season.”

Powell (2-2, 2-0 3A West) then has Thursday off before heading back out on the road, heading down to Green River on Friday to take on the Wolves (1-0 overall, 1-0 3A West) at 2 p.m. who are tied for the No. 5-ranked spot.

The week wraps up in Lander on Saturday at 1 p.m. when Powell takes on the Tigers (1-1 overall, 1-0 3A West) who are tied for the No. 5 spot with Green River.

Gilliatt allowed his team to take off Thursday and Friday last week to rest and prepare for the slate of games this week, comparing it to a practice run at the state tournament.

“It’s definitely not ideal to play three games in four days but it’s also a great practice run for the state tournament,” Gilliatt said. “Ideally, we get to a spot in the games where I can rotate more of my younger players in.”

Weather has been a huge factor this season which has resulted in this set of games in four days, with Gilliatt hoping that the worst is behind the team as they approach the midway point of the year.

“It will be great to finally get several games again,” Gilliatt said. “The weather has been the biggest variable this year and hopefully winter is behind us now.”

After this weekend the Panthers return home on April 21 and 22 against Lander and Pinedale.
