One vehicle stolen, others burglarized in Cody crime spree

Posted

Cody police are asking for the public’s help after a thief, or thieves, stole one vehicle and broke into several others early Monday morning. Police logs indicate more than eight vehicles were burglarized while a 2011 Ram 3500 Mega Cab truck was stolen.

The Ram was taken from an address on Arizona Place, with the owner reporting that they believed they’d left the keys inside the vehicle. The truck was reported stolen around 5:45 a.m. Monday, and additional reports of burglaries came in throughout the day.

The log indicates that the crimes occurred in the same general area on top of the hill in Cody — on Casper Drive, 11th Street, 15th Street, Heart Mountain Street and Red Butte Avenue.

A dash camera inside one of the burglarized vehicles, in the 1900 block on 15th Street, apparently captured an image of the burglar: A photo released by police on Tuesday shows a male in a hoodie inside the vehicle. They said the image was captured around 1 a.m.

In a Facebook post, police asked anyone with information about the male or the case to contact the department by calling 307-527-8700, sending a message through Facebook Messenger or using its anonymous crime tip reporting service at tinyurl.com/de3tkess.

One tip received on Monday and included in the log suggests more than one person might have been involved: The caller said they saw two teenage males walking east on Red Butte Avenue and opening car doors on Sunday night/Monday morning.

In their Facebook post, Cody police reminded residents “to remain vigilant and take appropriate steps to prevent becoming a victim of this type of theft, including keeping valuable items out of view and locking your vehicle when you are away.”
