It was a productive weekend for the Powell High School girls’ swimming and diving team, with a pair of wins at the Terry Bartlett Invitational in Cody Friday and the Riverton Invitational Saturday. The two events produced a host of state-qualifying performances.

Terry Bartlett Invitational

Last year, the Lady Panthers scored 305 points at the Cody invitational, losing by just 24 points to Buffalo; this year, Powell took the top spot with 396 points. Buffalo was second 352, Cody third with 221 and Worland fourth with 152. Newcastle rounded out the top five with 82 points

“The best news from the Cody Invite is that we already have 13 state qualifiers this year versus only 12 qualifiers in all of last year,” said PHS head coach Bob Smartt. “Several other athletes are nearing state qualification. To score 396 this year is a nice improvement.”

Powell was led by event winners Emma Karhu in diving (191.8), Rachel Kuntz in the 100 butterfly (1:11.13) and Anna Fuller in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.50). The five new state qualifiers added at the Terry Bartlett were Kuntz (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke), Elizabeth Liggett (200 and 500 free), Grace Harder (500 free), and divers Maddi Hackenberg (151.30) and Kami Jensen (161.95).

“Freshman Kami Jensen’s sparkling dive performance was a quantum leap from her first high school meet at Lander (108.80) and from her middle school dive scores,” Smartt said. “Kami is willing to challenge big degree of difficulty dives.”

The Lady Panthers finished with 19 personal best performances, Smartt said, “a healthy number, especially considering we swam morning practice.”

Powell was especially strong in the 100 butterfly, posting a sweep of the top four places: Kuntz finished in the top spot, followed by Lucia Harder, Addison Moretti and Ashlyn Aguirre. In the 500 free, the Lady Panthers had three swimmers in the top four: Liggett finished second, Grace Harder third and Sydney Legler fourth. Anna Fuller (1:20.50) and Kuntz (1:22.30) went 1-2 in the breaststroke.

The meet was scored to 12 places with a max of four athletes from a team in an event. In all, 21 Panthers scored individual points. Seven Panthers scored at least 20 points: Kuntz (29), Fuller (27), Liggett (26), Lucia Harder (26), Moretti (23), Grace Harder (22) and Emma Karhu (20). Other athletes scoring points included Kaylee DeGlau, Kylie Kahl, Grace Sapp, and Azurdey Burton.

Riverton Invitational

In a quick turnaround, the Lady Panthers were on the road Saturday for the Riverton Invitational, placing first in the four-team event with 413 points. Lyman was second with 388, followed by Riverton with 262. Rawlins rounded out the team scores with 109 points.

“Last year we scored 398 points at this meet and a strong Lyman squad did not attend,” Smartt said. “Our team had 17 personal best performances found on the team manager printout.”

Emma Karhu finished first in diving for the second straight meet with a score of 168.9. Madison Lowery (27.70) and Lucia Harder (27.95) went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle; both times were state qualifiers.

In the 500 freestyle, Fuller was second with a time of 6:11. Lucia Harder, Gabby Paterson and Kuntz finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

State qualifying swims included Moretti (2:16) and Fuller (2:16) in the 200 free, Kuntz (2:37) and Liggett (2:40) in the 200 IM, Fuller and Lucia Harder in the 500, and Moretti and Lowery in the backstroke.

Eleven Lady Panthers finished with 20 or more points: Lowery (28), Moretti (26), Fuller (25), Lucia Harder (25), Kuntz (23), O’Brien (22), Liggett (22), Grace Harder (22), Paterson (21), Karhu (21) and Legler (20).

It will be another busy week for the Lady Panthers, with the Worland Invite Friday and the Gene Dozah Invitational Saturday at the Powell Aquatic Center.
