Homesteader Roots program applications open until May 15

Josh Pomeroy of the Homesteader Roots program is ready to further his quest to provide more variety of trees in Powell as the program hits its fifth anniversary.

Powell homeowners have until May 15 to apply to have a large deciduous shade tree or small ornamental tree planted in their yard.

The program, which began five years ago, offers homeowners a tree planted in their front yard for a $75 cost share if the resident meets all requirements. Trees must be planted in the front yard of a residence within Powell city limits.

Last year Homesteader Roots volunteers planted 10 trees in town.

“We probably have the funding to do about the same amount, but if more people apply I will find more funding,” he said. “Our goal is to plant at least 10 a year.”

They source all of their trees from Pollen Landscapes nursery in Cody, and once again local Boy Scouts will help plant the trees. Pomeroy said they’re planning to plant the first part of June.

The program planted 29 trees in the first four years of the program, which subsidizes the cost of planting mature shade trees on the properties of private homes in Powell. The $75 charge for homeowners, up from $50, is still roughly 25% of the cost for the tree, installation and maintenance for a year — the program covers the other 75% by donations, which Pomeroy said are greatly appreciated and welcomed.

For more information, to cost-share a tree, or to volunteer or donate to the program, email homesteaderroots@gmail.com or pick up an application to cost-share or donate to the Powell chamber.
