The first phase of a project to build a pathway on the grounds of The Heartland assisted living facility broke ground Oct. 3 and is expected to be completed around the middle of the month.
The project is being funded by Powell Medical Foundation and there are other phases that The Heartland will continue to raise funds for. Phase 1 will include a pathway through the courtyard of the facility connecting north resident exits with the inner courtyard, while also providing a sitting area in the inner courtyard. Phases 2 and 3, which have not been funded yet, will continue the sidewalk all the way around the facility and add “a rest stop” at certain points, PMF Director Amy Wells said.
“For wheelchair users it’s hard for them to get around the space,” she said. “So it’ll all be wheelchair accessible, which will be just kind of a really good completion of their walking space.”
