Cub boys impress in home meet

Worland quad canceled, next meet April 15 in Cody

Powell Middle School held its annual Powell Athletic Roundtable Invitational on Saturday at Powell High School — where the Cub boys impressed at both the eighth and seventh grade level in their first meet of the season.

EIGHTH GRADE

Overall the eighth grade boys showed a strong team effort, as the Cubs didn’t have an event winner, but also did not have a top placer outside the top five in every event they entered.

Breckyn Kobbe led the way in the sprints taking third in the 100 meters (12.93) and second in the 200 meters (27.91); Garrett Lennon placed second in the 400 meters (59.97) — earning a qualifying time for the Best of the Best meet at the end of the season in Lander.

Broc Frank placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:32.1) and third in the high jump clearing 4 feet, 10 inches; Kason Sherman placed fourth in the 1,600 meters (5:57.99); Lincoln Crawford placed third in the 100 meter hurdles (18.13) — earning a qualifying time in the process, while also placing third in the triple jump (31-2); Dayton Lawrence placed fourth in the 200 meter hurdles (32.87) and fifth in the long jump leaping (16-2 1/2) and Kaden Wolff placed second in the shot put (34-7).

All three relay teams placed in the top three for the Cubs.

“The eighth grade boys work hard and it shows,” coach Zach Coombs said. “As a group they love track. I am excited to see [how] they progress as the season goes.”

SEVENTH GRADE

The seventh graders experienced similar success but came out with winning marks in two individual races by Dylan DeBoer in addition to sweeping three relay races.

DeBoer led the way for the seventh grade team, winning the 800 meters (2:35.73) and the 1600 meters (5:45.3). DeBoer earned a qualifying time in the 800 meters.

Powell also won the 4x100 meter relay with the team of Brayden Benander, Keaton Bennett, Braxton Nelson and Santiago Gutierrez (55); the 4x400 meter relay comprised of Landon McDonald, DeBoer, David Stearns and Karcher Foley (4:42.02) and the 800 sprint medley composed of Benander, Cash Peterson, Cobey Kahn and McDonald (2:09.55).

“Coach [Jodee] Metzler does a great job with the distance kids,” Coombs said. “She pushes them hard and they respond well to her workouts. Honestly I was surprised with the relay results. The 4x400 was great because we were behind and Karcher Foley showed a lot of grit and determination to pull off the victory.”

Despite not winning their events, Foley placed second in the 400 meters (1:03.47) and earned a qualifying time alongside Gutierrez in fourth (1:06.5). Bennett earned a qualifying time in the 200 hurdles (32.51) for his second place finish.

NEXT MEET

Powell was scheduled to take part in a quad in Worland on Tuesday, April 4, but the meet was canceled due to the track not being clear of snow.

The next meet on the schedule for the Cubs is April 15 in Cody, followed by a dual at Cody the following Tuesday.

“We are looking forward to great weather next week and seeing the kids continuing to improve,” Coombs said.
