County offices moving to allow large HVAC project to proceed

Posted

For at least the fall and winter months, most Park County departments will be operating out of new locations as the Park County Courthouse and annex buildings get new HVAC systems.

The current HVAC system is more than 30 years old and has been failing regularly as of late, as many staff and even visitors to the courthouse can attest.

Departments are starting to move out in late August, and by late October all temporary arrangements will be in place.

It’ll mean people needing something from a county office may have to go to a different building. For Powell residents it could actually make some things easier, as the clerk and treasurer will both be sending extra staff to Powell during the period they’re in temporary digs, which will allow the Powell offices to be open all week. Additionally, most circuit court hearings will be in Powell, where Judge Joey Darrah, a Powell resident, already does some of his work.

“This is something that has to happen and we’re sorry for the inconvenience,” Chair Dossie Overfield said. “We appreciate their patience.”

She said staff from public works were busy preparing signs to direct people to the correct temporary buildings for different departments. Clerk Colleen Renner said they should also stress more firmly that the county employee parking lot across Beck Avenue from the courthouse is only for county employees as the parking lot behind the courthouse will be taken up by contractor staging. She said during the school year there are often multiple student or teacher cars in the parking lot.

By mid October, just about the only entities still using parts of the courthouse will be those with court functions, such as Circuit Court, District Court and the County Attorney’s office.

Park County Engineer Brian Edwards said the schedule is for certain offices to start returning around March, especially the County Clerk’s office, in order to prepare for elections.

The county offices will be splitting up and moving to one of several locations. These locations are as follows, according to a list prepared by the county:

The Park County Planning and Zoning department will be relocated to the Park County Complex as soon as possible, before Aug. 31. Staff will be situated in suites 2201, 2211, and 2213.

The Park County Assessor’s Office will be relocating to the Park County Complex by the end of August. It will be situated in suite 3240.
