Cody temple building permit held up until at least after Tuesday council meeting

The Cody City Council will get a review of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple permitting process from City Attorney Scott Kolpitcke during Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

And until at least the end of that meeting, which starts with a 6 p.m. executive session and 7 p.m. regular session, a building permit for the temple is being withheld, Cody Mayor Matt Hall said.

“He just wants to walk us through,” Hall said of Kolpitcke. “There’s been a little bit of confusion.”

The mayor said building permits can take from a couple days to a couple of weeks to be issued, so at this point it isn’t all that different from normal in regards to the process.

Hall said he also wants to talk about whether there needs to be changes in the process in the future to involve the city council in more of the decisions regarding issues of the magnitude of the temple.

“It’s probably something we’ll look at,” he said. “I think most people would think that’s something that should be in the purview of city council. There are some things we may need to address.”

The Cody Planning, Zoning and Adjustment Board approved a site plan for the temple last week after a series of lengthy meetings and hundreds of comments both for and against the building.

It is slated to be built in a residential area off Skyline Drive, near the Cody golf course.
