Cody man accused of assaulting pregnant woman now facing perjury charge

A Cody man who allegedly assaulted his pregnant partner last fall is facing a new felony charge that alleges he recently asked the woman to lie and recant her statements against him.

Travis W. Rednour was charged with aggravated assault in September, after the 40-year-old allegedly grabbed his longtime partner by the hair and slapped her.

The woman told Cody police that Rednour had become angry — yelling and screaming at her — after learning that she was pregnant. Early on the morning of Sept. 18, the woman said Rednour returned home drunk, shoved her, pulled her around by her hair and slapped her in the face. She also reported that, as she and one of her children left the residence, Rednour said he was going to slit their throats “and laugh as you bleed.” A clump of the woman’s hair fell out while she was speaking to police, charging documents say, and the side of her face was red and swollen.

The Park County Attorney’s Office charged Rednour with the felony assault, which alleges he intentionally, knowingly or recklessly caused bodily injury to a pregnant woman. Rednour denied having any sort of physical fight with the woman when contacted by police and he has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He posted a $30,000 surety bond a few days after his arrest and was released from jail, but he was rearrested on Feb. 3, after he was twice caught driving in Cody with a suspended license.

It was while back in jail on Feb. 7 that Rednour called the woman and said she was “going to have to get the [assault] case dismissed,” according to a Cody police summary of the recorded call. Rednour reportedly told the woman to get a lawyer and recant her statement, but she said it wouldn’t matter, because the case is in the hands of prosecutors.

Rednour then suggested it would make a difference “if you said you lied,” but the woman said she had not lied, and Rednour “acknowledges that,” according to the police summary of the call. Deputy Park County Attorney Jack Hatfield used the comments as the basis for a new charge of solicitation of perjury.

The woman had reportedly cautioned Rednour about having the conversation over the phone and suggested he “just take a plea deal and do five months in jail,” charging documents say. However, Rednour disagreed with that approach.

At the initial Park County Circuit Court hearing on the perjury charge — a felony that carries up to five years of prison time — Hatfield said just placing the phone call violated Rednour’s bond conditions, as he had been ordered to have no contact with any witnesses in the case.

“He’s not listening to the district court,” Hatfield said.

Rednour’s bond on the assault charge was revoked and reset at $25,000 cash on Feb. 9. A Park County District Court commissioner left the prior conditions in place, records show, including the order to have no contact with witnesses. However, Rednour made five more calls to the victim later that day, Hatfield said.

For his part, Rednour said he hadn’t intended to violate the court’s order, saying “the commissioner did not inform me that my bond conditions were still in effect.” He also indicated that he needs to contact the woman, because he’s still handling their finances.

Like the district court commissioner, Circuit Court Magistrate Breanne Phillips ordered Rednour to have no contact with the woman and set bond on the perjury charge at $10,000. Combined with the assault case and a $5,000 bond on two pending charges of driving with a suspended license, Rednour must post $40,000 to be released again. He indicated that he won’t be able to post that sum, calling $10,000 in the perjury case “a little steep.”

Rednour is currently scheduled for an April 17 trial on the aggravated assault charge, with a preliminary hearing in the perjury case set for today (Thursday).
