Powell’s garbage will soon be getting hauled to Cody by a brand new semi-truck.
At a Monday night meeting, the city council agreed to purchase a 2024 Western Star semi-truck from Floyd’s Truck Center of Gillette and Casper. Among two bidders, Floyd’s submitted the low offer of $196,918 — some $28,000 less than what the city had budgeted for a new truck.
The sanitation department will use the vehicle regularly, to haul a trash trailer from the city’s transfer station (on North Ingalls Street) to the Park County Regional Landfill south of Cody.
The city’s current semi was only intended to serve as a Band-Aid until a new one is purchased, said City Administrator Zack Thorington. Floyd’s offered $40,000 for the current semi as a trade-in but the city will sell it separately instead.
“We feel that we can auction that for more — quite a bit more,” Thorington told the council.
Up until last year, the city had been hauling its trash to Billings, but made the switch to Cody as the trip to and rates in Billings became more expensive.
Peterbilt of Wyoming also submitted a bid, offering a semi for $252,400. The Casper-based business offered more on the trade-in — $72,000 — but the total price still came in about $23,000 higher than Floyd’s, according to a city analysis.
Under its new contract with the city, Floyd’s must deliver the new truck by May 15, 2024. After that, the company could face a penalty of $50 per day.
