Busy week ahead for girls soccer

Posted

Inclement weather last Tuesday, April 4, forced the Powell Panther girls’ soccer team into an unexpected week off — forcing the team into a heavy schedule this week beginning on Wednesday at Cody.

“The main focus that we have had is filling some voids defensively and being in a better position to be able to cover and support one another,” coach Danny Agee said. “Hopefully we can work together a little better and see an improvement in these areas.”

Those changes will be put to the test Wednesday at 2 p.m. on the road against No. 1-ranked Cody (4-0 overall, 3-0 3A West), a team which has outscored opponents 37-4 early in the season.

With only 17 on the roster the fitness of the Panthers (2-1 overall, 2-0 3A West) will be put to the test this week, after the schedule does not slow down following the Wednesday contest.

Powell continues its road trip further south on Friday, heading down to Green River to take on the No. 4-ranked Wolves (1-0 overall, 1-0 3A West) at noon.

“Honestly, I see the entire regular season as an opportunity to build and develop as a team and this includes conditioning,” Agee said. “This will be similar to having to play in the state tournament so I believe it will be a great opportunity for us to replicate that pressure.”

The road trip concludes Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Panthers head up to Lander to take on the No. 2-ranked Tigers (1-1 overall, 1-0 3A West).

In a competitive 3A West, these games are expected to help the Panthers learn where they stand nearing the midway point of a season that has been filled with schedule changes due to poor weather.

That weather is expected to heat up this week, allowing for the Panthers to focus on soccer while being able to relax more while playing outside.

“I believe the nice weather will help us all to relax a little and just focus on soccer,” Agee said. “However, the school and the other programs like track have been easy to work with and our time indoors as a result has been very beneficial. So I hope, other than being more comfortable outside, that we proceed as normal.”

Powell has already reached halfway to its win total from a year ago, while scoring more goals in the process through the first three contests.

The Panthers return home next weekend, April 21 and 22, with games against Lander and Pinedale.
