Trapper women sweep competition

Following a three week road trip the Northwest College women’s basketball team hosted two Montana opponents before heading into the winter break — defeating Dawson Community College 90-65 on Thursday night before beating Miles Community College 66-48 on Friday.

Returning home to Cabre Gym for the first time since November, the Trappers (12-5) were in a battle early against the Buccaneers (7-7).

Northwest trailed after the first quarter 23-22, but had a spark off the bench in Kamber Good Luck who came in and scored 10 in the opening period.

“I have been waiting to have bench players contribute,” Davis said. “I know what they are capable of … Kamber really stepped up in all the right ways and I was super impressed with her.”

The Trappers recaptured the lead with 7:42 left in the second quarter and did not relinquish it, outscoring the Buccaneers 24-17 in the second to take a 46-40 lead into the locker room.

Darla Hernandez alongside Good Luck helped the Trappers dominate inside and push the lead out to double digits midway through the third quarter and not allow the visitors within striking distance.

Complete domination in the fourth quarter allowed the lead to swell even further, outscoring Dawson 26-12 to make the final score 90-65.

Northwest outrebounded Dawson 31-21, and dominated in bench points 28-12 in the victory.

Hernandez and Good Luck led the way with 21 points apiece, while Roxanne Rogers finished with 15 and Anna Knight and Jimena Montoro-Cabezas finished with 11 each.

A dominating win on Thursday meant if the Trappers won against the visiting Pioneers (4-11) then Northwest would head into the winter break on a three-game winning streak.

Unlike Thursday, the Trappers came out early and dominated from the tip, leading 17-2 with 3:10 left in the first quarter. That lead held after the first quarter, with Northwest taking a 20-5 lead into the second.

The lead swelled in the second quarter and the Trappers led by as many as 24 and headed into the locker room with a 35-16 lead.

The lead shrank slightly in the third quarter, but the Trappers never allowed the Pioneers to make a run back into the contest in the second half.

A dominant first half was enough for the Trappers, who finished the weekend with a 66-48 victory and head into the break on a three-game winning streak.

“I wouldn’t say they were easy games, both those teams are really good, but I just think the girls prepared the right way,” Davis said. “They seemed ready to go. I know they were ready for break, but they understood the task at hand.”

Montoro-Cabezas and Hernandez led the Trappers with 16 points each, while Rogers finished with 12 points and four steals and Good Luck finished with 11 points.

WINTER BREAK

Heading into the winter break the Trappers are seven games above .500, and now take a two week break before returning to the court Jan. 6-8 for a three-game road swing.

“Those were definite confidence boosters for when we prepare the right way,” Davis said.

Northwest was without starter Natalyah Nead for the three games heading into the break, but Davis anticipates her returning healthy after a couple of weeks to rest.

“I think the new car smell has worn off,” Davis said. “They realize what college basketball is about and what you have to put in on a day-to-day basis. I am super excited to see how they come back from break and keep building off what we have already done.”
