PHS boys add several new marks

A twilight dual gave the Powell Panther boys the opportunity to battle against cross county rival Cody on Tuesday night, dropping a close team battle but earning several new state qualifying marks.

Seston Shoopman earned a qualifying throw in the shot put, winning with a heave of 47 feet, 4 1/2 inches.

“Seston has been on the verge of big throws going back to indoor. It was great to see him break through and automatically qualify,” coach Scott Smith said.

Another new qualifier came in the 1600 meters, where Liam Taylor was runner up but earned a state spot with a 4:39.49 after coming up short by less than a second earlier in the year.

“Liam has been running great for us all season and now that he automatically qualified, he will be able to run with more confidence and less distraction,” Smith said.

The last qualifying mark came from Stuart Shoopman, who added the 300 meter hurdles to his already established 110 meter hurdles qualification with a 42.29, winning both events on Tuesday after also winning the 110 meter hurdles with a 16.17.

Other winners were Landon Hyde in the 400 meters (57.09), Korbyn Warren in the 800 meters (4:39.49) and Isaiah Woyak in the high jump (6-2) as the Panthers put up strong performances across the board.

“Getting new automatic qualifiers at each meet shows that kids are improving, which is what we strive for all the way through state,” Smith said.

Smith said that the Panthers ran a couple of 4x400 relay teams on Tuesday, with neither earning a qualifying mark but primarily serving as a conditioning session for athletes.

Powell will have a couple of meets this weekend, with several athletes heading to Casper on Friday to take part in the Wyoming Track Classic starting at 4 p.m. at Kelly Walsh High School.

Participating athletes are top nine in field events (including ties), top eight in running events up to the 800 and top 12 athletes in the 1600 and 3200 meters regardless of classification.

Boys who are listed as entries on MileSplit as of Wednesday morning included Woyak in the high jump and triple jump, Taylor in the 1600, Warren in the 3200 and Adam Williams in the pole vault.

Other Panther athletes will head to Cowley on Saturday morning to take part in the Rocky Mountain Invitational.
