Rivalry refresh? Reclassification could increase meaning of Park County rivalry

Posted

After years of rivalry games where each win mattered in every sport, Cody was bumped up to 4A in 2018 for certain sports in an effort to balance the classifications with 16 competing at the top level in volleyball, basketball and track and field.

The Park County rivalry has maintained its extra level of meaning in other sports such as football, wrestling, swimming, golf and soccer, with both Powell and Cody competing at the 3A level. Tennis is an all class sport, so the county rivals also play together on the court.

However, a final reading passed at the spring Wyoming High School Activities Association meeting to restructure the classes moving forward in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 reclassification cycle.

That structure will impact the 3A West in those sports, with Cody expected to move back down to 3A in all sports.

In the new cycle, 4A would include schools that all have an Average Daily Membership (ADM) of 700 or above; 3A would include schools that have ADM between 210-699 students; 2A would have an ADM between 110-209 while 1A would encompass an ADM of 109 and below.

The WHSAA uses ADM to determine where schools are placed and Cody was voted to move up in 2018 as a plan to expand 4A to 16 teams.

Under this plan Cody, which had an ADM of 626.28 in the most recent numbers provided, would need a significant increase in ADM to remain in 4A moving forward.

This will not affect football classification which will remain the top 10 teams in 4A, the next 12 in 3A, the next 14 in 2A, 14 in 1A 9-man and the remaining schools in 1A 6-man.

The change would drop Cody down to 3A, and Moorcroft would drop back down to 2A after joining 3A this past year.

No other schools would be affected by this change according to numbers currently available from the WHSAA, although Thermopolis is close to the threshold to drop to 2A.

With these changes it would once again add meaning to the Park County rivalry in every sport, with Cody returning to the 3A Northwest in both volleyball and basketball, alongside competing in track and field for both boys and girls starting after this upcoming year.
