PHS swimming hosts Gene Dozah Saturday

After a quick break the Powell High School swim and dive team is looking forward to getting back into the pool this weekend, hosting a quad on Friday and the Gene Dozah Invite on Saturday.

To this point in the season, the Panthers have eight qualified for the state meet, with three of those being qualified in diving.

Coach Stephanie Warren said the first week of practices leading up to the break were cut short due to the freezing weather, and the team is just now getting back into the pool after allowing for a break to spend time with family.

In the first action of the new year, Powell is scheduled to host a quad with Newcastle, Worland and Lander on Friday at 4 p.m.

Warren is excited to see north conference opponents Worland and Newcastle alongside the hope that the 26-time defending state champion Tigers make their way to Powell for both days of competition.

“More than anything we are going to get to see Worland and Newcastle and those teams that are in our conference,” Warren said. “It will be nice to see where we are coming back after break.”

Warren said she knows the team still has more than a month to reach its overall goals, and she’s still trying to figure out the right events for some athletes.

She hopes to find a qualifying event for each athlete in the coming weeks.

On Saturday the Panthers will welcome even more teams to Powell, with Buffalo, Cody, Pinedale and Riverton joining the teams participating in the quad on Friday.

“We saw Buffalo in Cody and they look really good this year,” Warren said. “They did not lose any of their strong swimmers over the last year. It will be fun to see where they stand hoping that Lander shows up.”

Warren said the team is expected to be at full strength for the first time this season, after having multiple swimmers out over the first two weekends.

The Gene Dozah Invite is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start on Saturday.

These will be the Panthers’ final two home meets before heading out on the road for a couple of weeks.

The final home meet for the Panthers will be a triangular on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
