Competitive in final regular season triangulars

Two triangulars wrapped up the regular season for the Powell Panther swim and dive team this past week. The Panthers competed in one final home triangular last Tuesday, Jan. 23, before heading to Buffalo on Friday to compete in the final event of the regular season.

POWELL TRIANGULAR

At the home triangular, the Panthers welcomed in Worland and Cody, competing in a double dual where the Panthers defeated Worland 163-77 but fell short against Cody 144-122 as the Broncs swept the night also defeating the Warriors 169-70.

Gabe Rose led the way, winning the 200 IM (2:15.74) and the 100 fly (59.16) while Will Fuller also won the 50 free (24.52).

“Gabe had a great senior night,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “Overall it was a good way to end our home meet season.”

Powell had a host of runners-up at the Powell Aquatic Center. Adam Williams was second in the 100 free (53.15) and the 100 back (1:01.37); Trystan Preator was second in the 200 free (2:17.17); Taggart Shumway was runner-up in diving (185.65) and Hugh Carpenter was second in the 500 free (5:58.27).

All three of the Panther relays finished the night in second place.

BUFFALO TRIANGULAR

Wrapping up the regular season on the road the Panthers made the trip over the mountain to Buffalo, taking on the Bison and Broncs in another double dual setting.

“Seeing them (Buffalo) before we go to conference this week was good to see where they are performance wise,” Warren said. “We don’t get to see Lander a lot but seeing them (Buffalo) allows us to push ourselves.”

The Panthers fell short in both matches, losing to Cody 98-80 and Buffalo 119-61 while the Bison defeated the Broncs 107-76.

Garrett Lennon earned an additional qualifying mark on top of his diving qualifications, earning a 50 free qualification after he swam a 25.94 lead-off leg for the 200 free relay.

The highest individual finish for Powell came from Carpenter, swimming a 56.01 in the 100 free.

A host of third place finishes came from Rose in the 200 IM (2:17.56) and the 100 fly (1:00.49), Williams in the 50 free (25.32) and Lennon in diving (186.9).

“Overall we had a good turnout for everybody’s performances,” Warren said.

CONFERENCE MEET

Heading into the postseason, the Panthers swim at the conference meet in Gillette on Friday and Saturday, which will be hosted by Buffalo.

At the meet, 3A and 4A will each be having their conference meet simultaneously, with the 3A events swimming first and then 3A.

“Good things will come from that, the kids are looking forward to swimming there,” Warren said. “We expect some pretty good swims there. It’ll be an interesting conference, we are looking forward to conference and then preparing for state.”

Warren said she is hopeful that the Panthers will have all their swimmers competing at the meet, as the team has only had all their swimmers compete once this season.
