PHS swim team adds new qualifier

Will train over break before January return

The Powell Panther swim and dive team finished third at the Riverton Invite, but added a new qualifier at the four team meet — Powell’s first in Fremont County this season.

Making that jump for the Panthers was Hugh Carpenter, who qualified in three separate events.

He first qualified in the 200 IM with a 2:24.89 in fourth place; then the 100 fly (1:06.93) with a third place finish and then he was the leadoff leg for the ‘A’ relay for the 200 free (25.44).

“He had a great weekend,” coach Stephanie Warren said. “He got sick the second week and wasn’t able to practice. We are looking forward to better things from him when he is in shape.”

Leading the way for Powell on the day was Gabe Rose, who earned two first place finishes in the 200 free (2:04.92) and the 100 fly (59.92).

“It’s great to see those strong performances early on,” Warren said. “Hopefully that means things will get better for him.”

That time in the 200 free was the final qualification for Rose, who has now qualified for all eight events at the state meet in February after just
three meets.

Powell was paced by the diving trio once again, as Jon Hawley placed second (192.4), Taggart Shumway placed third (172.4) and Garrett Lennon placed fifth (159.45).

He’s (Hawley) hoping to beat his personal best from last year,” Warren said.

His personal best stands at 213.15 in six dives which he set last year, and Warren is hopeful he can beat it after his strong start after three meets.

“Want to see if he can finish a strong senior year,” Warren said.

Another top placer included Adam Williams who placed second in the 500 free (6:08.41) and fourth in the 50 free (25.15).

The Panthers top relay team was the 200 free, made up of Carpenter, Rose, Will Fuller and Williams (1:42.66).

Powell placed third with 82 points as a team, behind Riverton with 125 and Cody with 100 but ahead of Worland with seven.

“We were hoping to see more teams, but Sublette County and Douglas were not there,” Warren said. “Hopefully we will see them at the Gene Dozah after break.”

The meet in Riverton was the final one before winter break for the Panthers, who will continue to be in the pool over the holidays before returning to competition in early January.

“We are going to keep them in the water and in shape to keep them where they need to be,” Warren said.

The first meets out of the break will be two home meets on Jan. 5 and 6, with the Panthers hosting a triangular that Friday alongside the Gene Dozah Invitational that Saturday.
