Three school records broken

Faster times continue to fly for the Powell High School indoor track and field team in Gillette, where two individual records and one relay record were broken at the Broncs Invitational on Friday.

Both individual records came on the girls’ side of the track, where Katie O’Brien put on a winning performance while breaking her own school shot put record by 7 inches with a throw of 38-9, and Kenna Jacobsen ran a 5:45.02 in the 1600 meters to place third and break her own record by .2 seconds.

“Katie has done a great job not only improving her best each meet but has become very consistent with over 37 foot throws,” coach Scott Smith said. “The other thing is that she has been consistently throwing well in finals against the top kids and showing her great competitive spirit.”

The boys broke a relay record by nearly nine seconds when Liam Taylor, Korbyn Warren, Thomas Shuman and Colin Walker broke the 4x800 record with a time of 9:34.72 to place second.

Smith said individual records for the team date back to 1998, but relay records started last year due to the older relay records having at least one athlete from another school who combined with  the Panthers in the past.

Powell was able to get a pair of high finishes from Isaiah Woyak in Gillette, winning the triple jump with a leap of 41-7 3/4 while also placing second in the high jump as he cleared 6-1 and placed second on jump attempts.

“It was really nice to see Isaiah have a good day in both of his events and fortunately he was able to heal quickly,” Smith said. “There is still a lot left in him considering that we haven’t had the high jump pit out yet this season to work with.”

Other second place finishes came from Sondre Furuhaug in the long jump (19-1) and Melissa Merritt in the 3200 meters (13:35.88).

Additional strong distance performances came from Karee Cooley placing fourth in the 1600 meters (5:50.14), Walker was sixth in the 3200 meters (12:08.63), Brynn Hillman placed seventh in the 1600 meters (6:00.01), Gracie Wolff was seventh in the 3200 meters (14:41.16), Taylor was seventh in the 800 meters (2:11.17) and the 1600 meters (4:55.23) and Melissa Merritt placed eighth in the 1600 meters (6:02.92).

“The distance kids have adjusted well to the shorter track. Some like it better as there is a constant change of scenery that keeps them mentally more aware,” Smith said.

Remaining top finishes came from Stuart Shoopman placing fifth in the 55 meter hurdles (8.57), Furuhaug placing sixth in the triple jump (37-7 1/2) and Tevon Schultz who placed sixth in the long jump (18-5) and eighth in the triple jump (37-4 1/2).

Powell will have this week off before heading back to Gillette next Thursday for the final regular season meet before the state meet the following weekend.

“We have been focusing on conditioning with some technique work but will start moving more towards technique and less conditioning next week,” Smith said.
