After having several days off for the first time this season after a quick early season blitz, the Powell Panther tennis teams made the trip to Sheridan on Saturday to take on the Broncs in a set of conference matches — where the Panther boys were defeated 4-1 and the girls were defeated 5-0.
The only victor for the Panthers was Cade Queen at No. 1 singles, who finished with a close straight sets victory (6-4, 7-6 (7-3)) to bounce back from his first loss of the season last Monday.
“Cade did not have a good day in Jackson,” coach Joe Asay said. “Cade was playing better tennis in Sheridan. He (Peter Jost) really pushed Cade in both sets.”
At No. 2 singles Nathan Preator battled but came up short, losing a close three set contest (5-7, 6-4, 3-6).
In No. 1 doubles, Taeson Schultz and Keegan Hicswa were defeated (4-6, 1-6), Ryan Barrus and Seeger Wormald lost in No. 2 doubles (1-6, 5-7) and Isaac Stensing and Tevon Schultz were defeated at No. 3 doubles (1-6, 2-6).
On the girls side, Lachelle Lee was defeated at No. 1 singles (2-6, 2-6) and Maya Landwehr lost in No. 2 singles (6-7 (0-7), 2-6).
The closest match for the girls came at No. 1 doubles, where the Whipple sisters Lucy and Naomi, were defeated in three sets after winning the opening set and holding a 3-0 lead in the third set (6-4, 3-6, 3-6).
“They came out after maybe having the momentum shift towards Sheridan; they came out and got up 3-0,” Asay said. “It was well earned by the Sheridan kids but we came up short. At the No. 2 singles and the No. 1 doubles we had good, full matches.”
Meaghan McKeen and Sophie Czirr were defeated at No. 2 doubles (1-6, 2-6) and Bailee Allred and Elaina Kousoulos were defeated at No. 3 doubles (2-6, 0-6).
The loss dropped the Powell boys to a 4-2 team record on the season, and the girls to a 2-4 record.
FIRST CODY MATCHUP
Powell will now keep it close to home, heading to Cody on Tuesday (today) to take on the Park County rival Broncs and Fillies at 4 p.m.
“I think we will match up well and I think it will be a good opportunity for the boys,” Asay said. “There’s a lot of strong tennis players here in the north so our kids are always tested, but that’s a good thing … We are looking forward to the matchups with Cody on Tuesday.”
This will be a non-conference matchup, with the return conference matchup in just over a week in Powell on Thursday, Sept. 7.
