Panther tennis falls in tough Sheridan matches

Another difficult opponent made its way to the Powell High School tennis courts on Saturday when Sheridan came to town  — defeating the Panther girls 5-0 and the boys 4-1.

The lone victory for the Panthers came at No. 1 singles, as junior Cade Queen won his matchup in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

“Cade [Queen] has stepped up a lot,” Panther tennis coach Joe Asay said. “He was tested on Tuesday against the defending state champion from Jackson and then faced against a No. 1 doubles player last year from Sheridan.”

In the girls’ No. 1 singles, senior Chase Anderson lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 2 singles, freshman Nathan Preator lost a close matchup in straight sets, losing 6-4, 6-2. Junior Lachelle Lee also lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 for the girls.

“It was evident that they had a lot of depth and a lot of good players over there in Sheridan,” Asay said.

In No. 1 doubles, seniors Alli Harp and Sydney Hull lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-2; while junior Keegan Hicswa and senior Kalin Hicswa lost their No. 1 doubles matchup 7-6, 6-1.

Seniors Alexis Terry and Hannah Hincks lost in No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-0, with junior Seeger Wormald and sophomore Isaac Stensing losing by an identical score.

Freshmen Ryan Barrus and Taeson Schultz lost a close matchup at No. 3 doubles in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Juniors Lucy Whipple and Maya Lanwehr lost their match 6-1, 6-1 to close out the matches.

CODY MATCHUP

The Panthers hope to rebound Tuesday (today) against Park County foe Cody at PHS.

“We will definitely keep looking at the consistency of the serve, and making sure to compete throughout the match,” Asay said. “We will look to get out there to compete against our Cody foes on Tuesday.”

This will be a non-conference matchup between the two teams, where Asay hopes more matches will help his team continue to grow nearing the midway point of the season.

Matches are set to begin at 3 p.m.
