No new qualifiers in last chance

One last chance in Cody last Tuesday gave the Powell Panther swimmers a final opportunity to earn another qualifying mark or qualify for state for the first time. While several swimmers earned new qualifying marks, no new swimmers qualified at the Terry Bartlett Last Chance meet.

Powell and Cody were the two teams in attendance, with two Panthers seeking first-time qualifying marks.

They came up just short, with Gabe Buchholtz missing by a couple of seconds in the 100 free (1:00.69) and the 100 back (1:11.3).

He and Branton Moore competed hard, coach Stephanie Warren said, as both cut time from their previous best marks this season.

“Gabe and Branton were able to take off some time … They both ended on a note saying they’re excited for next year,” Warren said. “Lukas (Legler) got sick and wasn’t able to go (to last chance). From Gillette he had his best time cut.”

Hugh Carpenter and Will Fuller added new times in their qualifying standards, giving Carpenter a selection of all eight events and Fuller six events.

Carpenter won the 200 free (2:01.2) while Adam Williams returned to the pool and won the 50 free (24.21) and the 100 back (1:00.24).

Taggart Shumway won the diving with a score of 180.5.

STATE MEET

Powell will now head to Laramie for the 3A State Championships on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Laramie High School.

“We are hoping to take the whole team,” Warren said, noting that much of the team had been sick throughout the last week.

She said they are hoping for individual improvements and performances at the state meet, as 3A will feature strong competition with the top two teams in Lander and Buffalo returning significant talent from last year.

“Laramie is a great pool,” Warren said. “Hopefully they can feel like they’ve been rested with a little taper here … We are hoping to get the best performance from them that we can.”

Lander will be seeking its 28th consecutive title in 3A while Powell will hope to improve its standing from a 10th place finish a year ago.
