Harvey breaks school Triple jump record

The Powell Panther girls’ track and field team battled during its first look at competition from around the Big Horn Basin, securing eight individual qualifying marks and one relay qualification with a second place team finish at the D&D Invitational in Worland last Thursday.

Powell was paced by a host of first place finishes, which included a new school record set by Waycee Harvey in the triple jump.

She cleared 36 feet, 8 1/2 inches, breaking the old record by 5 inches which was set by her former teammate Sydney Spomer at the state meet last year.

She also had strong performances in the long jump to place second (16-5) and was third in the 200 meters (26.72) before being part of the winning 4x400 relay team consisting of herself, Kinley Cooley, Kenna Jacobsen and Audrey Johnson.

“Waycee had a great meet, automatically qualifying in all four events and a new school record in the triple jump,” coach Scott Smith said. “Her long jump and 200 performances were both into a pretty stiff wind which makes them even more outstanding.”

Cooley had a strong day in the distance races, qualifying in the 1600 (5:29.59) and the 3200 (12:15.62) while winning both.

“Kinley has been working hard all year with cross country, indoor and since indoor ended and it really showed by not only her two individual wins, but she brought us from second to first in the 4x400 relay and set Waycee up to really extend the lead over a very good Worland team,” Smith said.

Other victories came in field events, with Lauryn Bennett winning the pole vault (9-0), Addy Thorington won the high jump (5-1) and Katie O’Brien won the shot put (39-3) to all earn qualifying marks for the state meet.

“Katie, Addy and Lauren picking up wins and automatic qualifications in the first meet was really nice to see in our first meet,” Smith said. “It was great to see them pick up where they left off at the end of last year.”

Other top three finishes included Bennett taking second in the 100 hurdles (17.93) and 300 hurdles (52.3); Jacobsen placing second in the 800 meters (2:36.93) and third in the 1600 (5:43.27); Brynn Hillman placing second in the 3200 (12:27.19); O’Brien placed second in the discus (107-2), just ahead of Nalani Jordan in third (105-6).

Powell was paced with strong finishes throughout, but placed behind the host Warriors who dominated the sprints to finish with a 209-196 margin, with both teams well ahead of third placed Lovell which had 55.
