Swimmers from around 3A and one 4A team converged in Lander for the Bruce Gresly Pentathlon on Saturday — where the Powell Panther girls’ swim and dive team qualified 12 athletes in 26 different events in the opening meet of the season.

Leading the way for the Panthers and finishing the highest in the overall standings at fifth for the pentathlon was Kik Hayano, who qualified in all five events — taking fourth in the 100 fly (1:07.77), fifth in the 100 free (59.41), tying for sixth in the 100 back (1:08.69), eighth in the 100 breast (1:20.57) and ninth in the 50 free (27).

“Kik was eighth place last year and moved to fifth this year by improving six seconds in her total time,” coach Bob Smartt said.

Five places behind Hayano in the overall standings and the only other Panther to place in the top 10 overall was Kaitlin Diver, who also qualified in all five events. She took 12th in the 100 fly (1:12.06), 12th in the 100 breast (1:21.33), 17th in the 100 free (1:02.89), 18th in the 100 back (1:11.89) and 20th in the 50 free (28.38).

The final Panther to qualify in all five events was Paige Thomas, who finished 15th overall. She took seventh in the 100 breast (1:19.88), 11th in the 100 fly (1:11.43), 19th in the 50 free (28.35), 22nd in the 100 back (1:13.21) and 23rd in the 100 free (1:04.82).

There were other Panthers who also qualified in multiple events — including Addy Powell who placed 13th in the 100 fly (1:10.26) and 16th in the 100 back (1:11.69) alongside Baylee Brence who placed 21st in the 100 back (1:12.94) and 25th in the 100 free (1:04.9).

A number of Powell swimmers qualified in one event. Patricia Christensen tied for sixth in the back (1:08.69), Kathryn Brence took sixth in the 100 breast (1:17.64), Charlee Brence took eighth in the 100 fly (1:10.26), Kate Miller took 17th in the 100 back (1:11.8), Aubree Fisher took 18th in the 100 breast (1:22.3) and Croix Tryon qualified in the 100 fly after taking 21st (1:14.44).

“The Lander Pentathlon is helpful to coaches as it encourages athletes to swim all four strokes, giving the coach a comprehensive look at how early season training is progressing,” Smartt said.

On the diving side, the Panthers had a choice of performing either 11 dives or six in the opening meet, with all PHS divers opting for 11 dives.

Leading the way and qualifying in the first meet was Aramonie Brinkerhoff, who finished sixth with a score of 252.85.

No team scores were kept at the event, but Smartt said if they were, the top three teams at the competition would have been Lander, Powell and Cody.

Each team had one athlete recognized for good sportsmanship at the event, with Emma Brence being named the winner for Powell.

CODY INVITE

The early season competition continues this weekend, with Powell traveling to Cody at 2 p.m. Friday to take part in an invitational.

That will be the only competition for the Panthers over Labor Day weekend. Two meets will take place the week after in Worland and at home with the Gene Dozah Invite on Sept. 9.
