The Powell Middle School girls’ track and field team dominated its opening meet, as the eighth grade Cubs broke a school record en route to a 149.5 point victory while the seventh grade team won by a 136 point margin.

Helping the team garner 250 points on the day were eight individual victories, 42 top-eight finishes and two relay wins which included the record-breaking quartet in the 4x100 relay.

In that squad was the quartet of Addy Brown, Kindyle Floy, Autumn Kidd and Abigail Visocky who ran a 54.47 to break the previous record of 55.06 which was set 31 years ago.

“Breaking the record in the first meet is a fantastic achievement,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “It shows the talent and teamwork these girls have. There is a good possibility they could break their own record this season.”

Individually, Floy won two of her three events, pulling the double in the 100 meters (13.91) and the 200 meters (28.9) while placing second in the high jump clearing 4 feet, 8 inches, to earn qualifying marks for the Best of the Best in all three events.

Visocky had two individual wins in the 200 meter hurdles (35.39) and the pole vault (5-6), earning a qualifying mark in the pole vault.

Macie Velasco won the 800 meters (2:43.34) and the 1600 meters (6:16.5) and earned a qualifying mark in the 800.

Brown won the long jump (13-6 1/2) with a qualifying leap and Shai Hite won the shot put (25-10) and placed second in the discus (69-6) to get qualifying standards in both throws.

The seventh grade girls followed a similar formula, winning seven individual events, having 34 top-eight finishes and two relay wins.

Lynea Christensen led the way, winning three different events in the 400 meters (1:11.71), 800 meters (2:59.81) and the high jump (4-4) — earning a qualifying mark in the high jump.

Lucy Ostermiller had two wins, claiming victory in the 100 meters (15.07) and the 100 meter hurdles (19.39), earning a qualifying mark in the latter event.

Anyston Keller won the 1600 meters (6:21.56) and Kara Sanders won the triple jump (25-2 1/2) as the final two victors on the day.

The 4x100 relay of Addie Gillett, Landyn Horsley, Ostermiller and Zaphira Paul won in 59.46 while the 4x400 relay of Christensen, Kaytlee George, Keller and Sanders won in 5:20.56.

Powell finished with 229.5 points to run away with the team crown as no other team scored over 100 points.

“This signifies how incredibly gifted these girls are and shows a promising start with high standards,” Haney said.

The team will next compete 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Lovell.

“Everyone has been working really hard this week and the weather has been cooperating,” Haney said. “We are hopeful to see more kids qualified this coming weekend with added competition. Unfortunately, we will be missing several participants due to other commitments.”
