Pioneers B team heads to state in Rock Springs

Wrapping up the regular season on the road Monday the Powell Pioneer B team came out with a pair of late victories over Cody to secure the No. 1 seed out of the Northwest at the state tournament.

After a three game losing streak in June, the Pioneers (19-9) have won 11 of their last 13 games — including seven straight since July 2.

That included finishing 7-1 in conference play, with the only loss coming earlier in the season to Cody at the tail end of the team’s three game losing streak.

“It’s huge going into state, confidence is key,” manager Keegan Brown said.

The victories in Cody ensured that at all three levels of play the Pioneer program finished a combined 31-1 in Northwest conference matchups in the regular season.

Those victories came on the heels of two late victories over the Cody Cubs, with Powell scoring five in the final inning in the first game to claim an 11-7 victory and two in the second game’s final inning to take an 8-6 win.

“It’s always nice to have two late, tough games,” Brown said. “Cody is not a bad team and in Cody they will play even better. It’s nice to see your team fight throughout the game even if you get down a couple runs.”

Powell will get a chance to take on the Cheyenne B team (21-25) first at the state tournament in Rock Springs at 4 p.m. on Thursday (today).

“You never know with Cheyenne,” Brown said. “They are going to be solid, but as long as we play like we have been playing we should be able to give it to them.”

This is not an inexperienced squad heading into the state tournament this year, with a lot of the players having gathered experience  last year when Powell hosted the tournament.

“It’s pretty much the same team as last year,” Brown said. “They’ve played in state. Some guys have already played in C state and they know what’s coming.”

If Powell wins the first game the next game will be on Friday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Rock Springs and Sheridan. If Powell loses it will drop down to the consolation bracket and take on the loser of the Rock Springs and Sheridan matchup at 1 p.m.
