Boys fall 3-1, girls 4-0 to WarriorsThe Powell High School soccer teams celebrated senior night, but not much else on Tuesday as Worland came to town and returned home with a sweep of the Panther teams. Powell fell 3-1 in boys’ action to the No. 3 Warriors. The girls fell by a 4-0 margin.

Tuesday’s loss assures that the Panther girls will need to compete in a play-in contest in order to qualify for this year’s state championship field. The Panther boys are all-but-assured of also heading to compete in that play-in round, although the possibility still exists for a three-way tie within the region.

The Panther boys’ hopes to grab control of the top spot in the Northwest quadrant took an early hit as Worland scored just seven minutes into Tuesday’s game. The Warriors added a second strike five minutes later for a 2-0 lead that set the Panthers on their heels.

Powell recovered one of the goals in the 23rd minute. Cody Wichman received a pass on the right wing, dribbled through traffic into the center of the field and unleashed a shot from 35-40 yards out that caught the Warriors’ keeper by surprise, halving Worland’s lead.

Neither team was able to add a score before intermission.

Worland reclaimed a two-goal advantage early in the second half off an indirect free kick in the penalty box that freshman goalkeeper Heston Swenson had little chance to react to. From there, the Warriors were able to play out the contest with a defensive mindset that prevented Powell from getting many clear shots at the net or carving into the deficit.

Similarly, the Panther girls also found themselves trailing early in their contest against Worland. The visiting side slipped three goals into the net as Powell struggled to find the defensive rhythm which the team had exhibited over the weekend against Jackson and Star Valley.

The only goal of the second half came on a penalty kick after the Panthers’ defense took a player down inside the box. The kick beat Powell goal keeper Sierra Baker high into the net for the final score of the contest.

With the losses, the Powell boys slide to 5-5. The Panther girls are 1-7. The Powell girls travel to face top-ranked Cody on Friday. The Panther boys will square off against their Park County rivals in a Saturday showdown.
