NWC tops Eastern Wyoming
The Northwest College volleyball team continued its midseason road trip through the Region IX North division over the weekend, splitting games at Eastern Wyoming and Laramie County Community College.
The Trappers picked up a four-set win at Eastern before being swept in three at LCCC. The results leave Northwest with a 10-12 overall mark and a 3-5 record within the region.
On Friday, Northwest exacted a measure of revenge for an earlier season loss with its 25-16, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19 victory at Eastern Wyoming. The two teams had played a wild five-set contest in Powell earlier this year with Eastern coming away victorious.
Cailey Washington continued her stint of hot play for the Trapper women, finishing with 13 kills in the contest and a .370 attack percentage. Teammate Becky Downs added 11 kills on a .455 attacking night as the pair formed a potent one-two punch at the net for NWC.
Flavia Oliveira and Lauren Buseman each added eight kills and Carly Meyer finished with seven to further add to the Trappers versatility. Overall, the team produced 49 kills against Eastern Wyoming.
Leah Schaal provided the assists on 45 of those 49 kills. On the back row, Katie Burnett finished with 16 digs to pace the Trappers. Oliveira added 13 digs while also leading the way with five of the Trappers’ nine ace serves.
Things didn’t go as well for Northwest College on Saturday afternoon as the team fell in straight sets 26-24, 25-11, 25-19 to LCCC. Oliveira had eight kills and Washington seven, but the rest of the Trappers’ rotation could only account for a combined eight kills against LCCC.
Schaal again led the way with 20 assists. Burnett finished with two of the Trappers’ four ace serves and also was the only NWC player to finish in double figures for digs with 13.
Northwest College travels to Central Wyoming tonight (Tuesday) before finally returning to Cabre Gymnasium for its final six games of the regular season. That homestand begins with a Friday game against Sheridan and a Saturday triangular with Dawson and the Rocky Mountain College JV.
