Panthers remain in top spot

With the exception of a lone unknown voter who doesn’t think they’re worthy of a place in the top five, the Powell Panther football team was a near-unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in Class 3A this week. Powell received 22 of 23 first-place votes in the latest Wyopreps coaches and media poll.

One week after holding the state’s leading rushing team to minus-6 yards along the ground and posting their second consecutive shutout, the Panthers erased doubts about their legitimacy in the minds of most voters. After a voting spread that saw the team anywhere from first to unranked last week, voters pooled their support behind Powell following the school’s impressive 55-0 win over Jackson.

Green River received the state’s only other first-place vote and climbed into second in the polls. The Wolves, newcomers to the 3A landscape, are 3-1 after needing a 42-yard field goal on the final play of the game against Cody last Friday.

Defending state champion Douglas, 3-1 after defeating Buffalo last week, jumps two places to third. Undefeated Lander holds steady at No. 4, while Buffalo, now 2-2 this season, slides to No. 5.

Star Valley, Cody, Riverton and Jackson also received votes this week.

The Panthers will play against Star Valley at 4 p.m. this Friday in Afton.
