Heart Mountain hike June 18

Posted

The Nature Conservancy is hosting its annual Heart Mountain community hike on Saturday, June 18. The event provides the public a chance to hike Park County’s iconic mountain in the company of experts.

Experts joining in the hike will be able to provide information and lesser-known facts about the mountain’s unique geology, plant and animal life and the management of the local landmark. Hikers are also free to climb the mountain at their own pace if they’d prefer.

Hikers are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the Heart Mountain Ranch headquarters, where coffee and donuts will be available. Powell Valley Healthcare will provide extra water and granola bars halfway up the trail.

Those wishing to take part should pack their own water, as well as a lunch. Sunscreen and clothing for inclement weather are also recommended.

Dogs are not allowed.

Participants should prepare for a full day outdoors and a strenuous uphill-downhill hike of approximately seven miles round-trip for those choosing to go all the way to the summit.

The hike is designed for anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors and learn about Heart Mountain. Participants are free to hike as much or as little of the mountain as they wish.

The Heart Mountain Ranch headquarters are located on Road 22. To get there, take U.S. 14-A west from Powell before turning north on Road 19 at the Heart Mountain Relocation Camp. Follow Road 19 (which will eventually change and become Lane 13 1/2) for several winding miles toward Heart Mountain until arriving at the intersection with Road 22.

For more information on the community hike, call the Heart Mountain Ranch office at 754-8446.
