Youth mental health discussed Monday in Cody

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Park County will be focusing on child and adolescent brain health this year.

The first meeting on the topic will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Cedar Mountain Room at Cody Regional Health, 707 Sheridan Ave. in Cody. This meeting is free and open to all.

Each year, 21.4 percent of kids from 13 to 18 experience a mental health condition, according to NAMI. For those aged 8 to 15, the estimate is 13 percent. Common disorders are anxiety, stress, and depression but others are possible, even in very young kids.

Many conditions are cyclical and periods of strong symptoms may come and go. Symptoms aren’t visible all the time. Children may also hide certain ones by saying and doing what they believe is expected of them.

While troublesome behavior may be labeled as “growing pains,” don’t brush off changes in behavior if they seem abnormal or excessive, especially if they happen frequently or interfere with a child’s daily routine. When this occurs, it’s possible your child may be experiencing a mental health condition.  Also, no one wants a child to be misdiagnosed or “labeled” incorrectly, so it’s important to know what is not worrisome.
