Lower level football at Powell High School enjoyed a season of growth at both the junior varsity and freshman/sophomore (froshmore) levels — with the teams combining for a 5-4 record while developing at the high school level.
The team kicked off the year with a loss in Riverton, before wins over Worland and Lander gave the Panthers a 2-1 record.
A loss to Cody moved the team to 2-2, before three straight wins over Worland, Green River and Lovell put the young Panthers at 5-2.
Consecutive losses to Jackson and Cody ended the season, but the young Panthers continued to show growth at both levels throughout the campaign.
“We had some good games and some not so good games,” coach Joel Hayano said.
Hayano said the freshmen came in somewhat inexperienced this season with some of them not playing in eighth grade, which mixed with a small group of sophomores at the froshmore level.
“We really needed the froshmore team to gain experience as well as improve as the year went on,” Hayano said.
He noted that the sophomore group in particular showed growth from last year through leaders such as Caden Nelson, Gabe Weimer, Rowan Diaz and Tyler Wenzel showing lots of improvement throughout the year.
“As a whole, we improved during the year and are excited to see the growth of the freshmen next year,” Hayano said.
At the junior varsity level the Panthers also used a majority of those froshmore players, since a lot of the junior class played varsity. That meant the coaches had to watch the minutes of each player to ensure they were not playing more than allowed each week by the Wyoming High School Activities Association.
“We had to play a lot of froshmores in those games because our juniors play a lot of varsity. So, we really had to manage their minutes,” Hayano said.
He said that in particular Jeremy Harms, Tucker Oliver and Nelson showed improvement throughout the year and also helped at the varsity level.
“Overall, we are happy with the development of our younger players and are excited to see them next year,” Hayano said.
