Dear Editor:
As of now, our Wyoming legislators have approved the construction of an ICE detention center in Uinta County. It is our responsibility as Wyoming citizens to prevent this moving forward.
The for-profit, private prison is being built by CoreCivic, a company known for abusive forced labor regulations and mistreatment of inmates. When it comes to detention centers in general, there have been more deaths this year than any other since 2009.
It doesn’t matter what race or background a person comes from, they deserve their basic human rights. Condoning the construction would be disregarding the fundamental virtues our country was built on.
Our state allowed for the Heart Mountain internment camp. This was one of our gravest mistakes. I fear, that by allowing the ICE detention center to be created, we will be staining our state’s history once again. We, more so than any other people, should know that this is wrong.
We must learn from the past. If I, a PHS freshman, can realize this, the adults of our community should be able to understand the severity of this situation as well.
Sincerely,
Sadie Tillotson
