Women deserve equal pay in the workplace

Every day, thousands of Wyoming women go to work — as doctors, construction workers, writers, secretaries, teachers, nurses, firefighters and in countless other professions. Across the Equality State, women serve as co-breadwinners in their households, working alongside men in both traditional and non-traditional positions.However, U.S. Census Bureau figures say, nationally, women earn just 78 cents for every dollar earned by men. Shockingly, that number is much lower here — full-time working women in Wyoming earn just 63 percent of the wage earned by Wyoming men.Gov. Freudenthal has signed a proclamation declaring today (Tuesday) as Equal Pay Day. While the day will pass quickly, the purpose of bringing attention to an issue affecting women and families every day of the year should remain on everyone's radar. It's high time that employers equalize pay — and that women demand equitable treatment. In Wyoming, and around the nation, women deserve equal pay for an equal day.
