Wings ‘N Wheels draws a huge crowd to Powell airport

The Wings ‘N Wheels airplane and car show returned to Powell after a three-year hiatus on Saturday. A sizable crowd came out to the Powell Municipal Airport to see classic planes and cars, as well as aerobatics and a drag race.

Chris Pelletier was among those who came out to enjoy the event. Even before 9 a.m., people were filling up the tarmac and weaving between the dozens of cars and planes on display.

“There’s a lot of people here. I’m impressed,” Pelletier said.

People from all over Montana, Idaho, and the Big Horn Basin came out to see the show. Martin Clemons, who is visiting the area from Germany with his sons Linden and Niklas, was among the spectators.

Dan Latimer from Cody, along with his dog Blue, was among the car enthusiasts showing off his classic truck. About eight years ago, he purchased the 1951 Dodge Power Wagon. He said he’d been restoring “every nut and bolt” ever since he got it.

“It was drivable, but just barely,” Latimer said, adding that this was the first car show he’s entered it into.

As part of the air show, pilot Todd Therp flew a North American T-6 Texan, a World War II fighter plane, from Rexburg, Idaho.

“It’s one of the prettiest flights you’ll ever see,” Therp said.

The popularity of the event suggests Powell may see it again in future years. Air shows like Wings ‘N Wheels can be difficult to put on due to the costs involved, and so a lot of people have to pass through the gate for the event to break even.

Therp said the Texan burns about 35 gallons per hour, which is about $240 per hour at current aviation gas prices.

Aerobatics pilot Dick Fennell performed a series of maneuvers over the airport for the crowd to see, followed by Therp in the Texan.
