A pilot who was scheduled to perform at next month's Wings and Wheels event at the Powell airport was killed while practicing last week.
Gary Miller was reported dead Thursday afternoon while practicing near Kiowa, Colo., southwest of Denver. He operated Gary Miller Airshows.
According to Denver television station CBS4, eyewitnesses said the plane stalled while doing maneuvers and spiraled into the ground, bursting into flames on contact. The report did not identify Miller as the pilot due to the fire, which made identification difficult, but a message on Miller's Web site confirmed that he had died in the crash.
According to Rinda Coons, events coordinator for the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce, Miller's was one of three acts set to perform at Wings and Wheels Aug. 14 and 15 in Powell. The Wings and Wheels committee will discuss the possibility of replacing the act at its next meeting, but it may be too late to do so, Coons said.
Miller also was slated to perform in Cheyenne Frontier Days next week.
He leaves a wife and four teenage children. Funeral services are scheduled today (Tuesday) at the base of the control tower at Centennial Airport in Englewood, Colo.
