We’re fortunate to have patriots

Dear Editor:

I believe we are lucky to have the number of active citizens among us here in Powell who look after each other.

Furthermore, we are certainly fortunate to be associated with a proportionately large number of neighbors in our community who still believe in what the U.S. flag stands for, and who are also committed to the importance of supporting their own families as well.

With additional reflection on this subject, I believe we can also be grateful for all the service members from Wyoming who have valiantly defended us.

Sadly we have lost many of our veterans who participated in a number of foreign wars overseas. A recent experience accentuates the emotions I feel now.

I recently stood at a gravesite, near the flag-draped casket of my dear friend Bob, and listened to the bugler play taps. He was one of my long-time buddies for over 20 years. His courageous actions as a U.S. Coast Guard member had certainly made a difference.

When Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was attacked, he willingly answered the call; fighting in the Pacific Theater during World War II.  Luckily, Bob was one of the survivors who later returned to work on a Montana ranch and in various other jobs.

I will always believe he was special as he dedicated his life to looking after his fellow country men and women; while concentrating on the positive side of life instead of just worrying about his own troubles.

Bob’s loving nature during his 96-year life span certainly made a good impression on many people, including his own family.

The many achievements of the so-called “Greatest Generation” (in particular those who left their homes in the Big Horn Basin to slug it out with determined enemies) has been inspiring and heart-rending too. Yet so many of us know others among us and throughout this great nation who served in the other conflicts since the end of World War II. Can we boldly say that we probably owe all of them a great deal of respect for making our world a better place?

As casualties to the warfare over our nation’s history, so many veterans have given everything for our precious freedoms and continue to do the same today, without hesitation or reservation.  God bless them all!
