The Park County Commission met Tuesday with Sleeping Giant representatives to discuss the ski area's liquor license application. This week's meeting followed on the heels of the commission's initial discussion of the application last week. At that time, the commission took no action on the application, which, in effect denied the request — for the time being, anyway. While Commissioner Bucky Hall, the acting chairman in Bill Brewer's absence during last week's meeting, indicated he favored approval of the license, commissioners Tim French, Jill Shockley Siggins and Dave Burke made no secret of their inclination to deny the application. That opposition was based on concerns of separating children from alcohol, possible drunken driving and one e-mail message and several phone calls and conversations asking them to turn down the request. There was little public comment leading up to the denial of the Sleeping Giant license. Since then, public comment has come fast and furious — with people weighing in on both sides of the issue. County Attorney Bryan Skoric advised the commission at the most recent meeting to begin the process again — including a new public hearing.Tuesday's meeting saw a standing-room only crowd in the commission chambers. That's a positive. It's our hope that, leading up to the public hearing, people on both sides will continue to speak up about the issue in a thoughtful and constructive manner. In the end, the commissioners have a duty to listen to the voters of Park County.
